Brazilian Minister Says Lula Will Keep His Word to Settle 400,000 Landless Families

Brazil’s Minister of Agrarian Development, Miguel Rossetto, declared that the Brazilian government’s previously announced goal of settling a total of 400,000 landless rural worker families on farms by the end of 2006 continues to be a priority, as per the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration’s National Land Reform Plan.

"We are making an enormous effort to acquire land for the purpose of fulfilling our Land Reform Plan objectives," said Rossetto during an interview with government-owned Radiobras radio station.

Rossetto explained that this year 50,000 families have received farms and another 32,000 are about to get farms. He said that by the end of the year a total of 115,000 families will be settled on farms through the Land Reform Plan.
