Brazil’s Oil Spill Firm Romancing the Arabs

AGS environmental solutions, a Brazilian company that works in prevention and control of accidents in which oil and chemical products are spilt on land or at sea, is starting to prospect the Arab market.

Located in Greater Porto Alegre, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, AGS has defined Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria and Sudan as the main target markets for exports.

“We chose the Arab countries because the great oil production in the region increases the potential for accidents and leaks,” said AGS commercial representative, Carlos Schulz, who was hired to operate in the Middle East and North Africa.

The company, established four years ago, wants to start selling internationally next year.

According to Schulz, AGS, which has Brazilian oil giant Petrobras as one of its main customers, offers a complete line of products like barriers, nets, cushions, towels, blankets and emergency kits, as well as technical orientation for their use.

“The company also offers a consultancy service to customers for prevention of accidents that may affect the environment,” he explained.

Production of absorbent products, made out of polypropylene, is their own.

Chemical engineer Gleison de Cerqueira Lima, who is responsible for development of products and is also one of the AGS partners, explains that the company was established after various years of experiments with oil leaks and various technical attempts to idealize the best way to protect the environment.

“Our company was established within international standards, mainly for preservation of the ecosystem,” explained Lima.

According to him, the largest AGS target on the domestic market is to establish a service base, containing emergency kits, every 500 kilometers throughout the national territory.

“It is necessary to start the necessary containing work in the first minutes after the accident,” he justified.

In Lima’s opinion, this emergency kit should be used as a first aid kits in trucks, trains, and ships that transport oil and other chemical products.

Based in the metropolitan region of the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in their own building, with an area of 4,000 square meters of built area, AGS generates around 40 direct jobs.

“During some periods of the year, we end up hiring over 80 third party service providers to answer to the great level of orders,” stated Lima.
