Soccer: Brazil to Host 2014 World Cup

The president of the Chilean Football Association Reinaldo Sánchez almost but confirmed Brazil as the country that will be hosting the 2014 World Football Cup. This discards the idea of  a joint Argentina/Chile organization.

Mr. Sánchez, currently in Holland, revealed that there’s a majority consensus in South America to support Brazil as the 2014 seat for the quadrennial soccer extravanganza.

“We don’t want to create false illusions or wishful thinking”, but the fact is that Chile does not have the conditions to host the Cup and Argentina has advanced that it will support Brazil, indicated Mr. Sánchez, contrary to insistent reports in the Santiago press about a shared organization.

“When I spoke to the Argentine delegates they told me they were voting for Brazil”.

“The 2014 Cup will be played in Brazil and by the time South America’s turn comes again, according to the current continental rotation system imposed by FIFA, and when we could have a chance many of us won’t be around”, said Mr. Sánchez.

Early June FIFA president Joseph Blatter admitted in Holland that the Argentina/Chile organization was an open option for the 2014 World Cup.

“In South America most think we’ll be playing in Brazil, but other federations have a chance and can present proposals. We played the 2002 Cup with a shared organization, why can’t this happen in 2014?”, said Mr. Blatter.

Japan and South Korea jointly organized the 2002 World Cup, which was won by Brazil, with Germany taking the sub title.
