McDonald’s Buys in Brazil the Islamic Friendly Meat It Needs

Of the total exported by hamburger producer Braslo, 50% were directed to the Arab countries, which started consuming in the beginning of the year the products made in the city of Osasco, in the state of São Paulo, in the southeastern region of Brazil.

Up to now, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman have imported 900 tons of beef hamburgers industrialized by Braslo.

"This operation is very promising as McDonald’s licensed Braslo as a supplier of bovine products to the region. So, we will have the opportunity of supplying beef hamburgers for an undetermined period, as long as Brazil remains competitive," stated the general director at Braslo, Roberto Ruban.

"Our challenge is to supply products that meet not only the strict specifications of the McDonald’s system, but that also meet the religious demands of the region," explains Ruban. Braslo is manufacturing products that use halal beef as raw materials, following the Islamic rules.

In Brazil, Braslo sends about 75% of the current production in their factory to McDonald’s. Last year, the factory supplied 15,000 tons of hamburgers to the fast-food chain, as well as 2,600 tons of poultry products and 300 tons of fish-based products, which yielded the company gross revenues of 140 million reais (US$ 63.4 million).

Throughout the world, the majority of products based on bovine beef, poultry and pork at McDonald’s is supplied by companies of the OSI Group, of which Braslo is part. This partnership started in 1955, year the North American fast-food chain was founded.

Braslo was founded in 1982. The proprietor, OSI, has nearly 100 years of experience in processing foods. The group’s history started in 1909, when the businessman Otto Kolschowsky opened a small store of beef products in Chicago. Today, the multinational counts on more than 12,000 employees and 75 factories around the world, in all continents.

The OSI created Braslo in Brazil with the aim of meeting the demand by the McDonald’s fast-food chain. Later the company started processing for other clients in food service like Outback, Friday’s and Lig-lig under the brand Glenmark.

In 2002, OSI of Brazil was created to manage Braslo and Penasul, aviculture company located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil.

Braslo also exports products to Europe and Asia and is licensed by the Ministry of Agriculture to export to more than 30 countries.

One of their export lines is "Fully Cooked", of completely cooked poultry products sold to Europe. The forecast is that Braslo’s global exports represent 20% of the company’s annual revenues.
