Brazil’s Petrobras Reaches Average 1.8 Million Barrels a Day. A Record

Petrobras rig off Brazil's coast Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil multinational, announced on Thursday, July 3, that it achieved a new record in monthly production in the country in June. An average of 1.867 million barrels were extracted per day.

The total surpassed the previous record, achieved in December 2007, by 12,600 barrels per day. According to the company, the average for June was 4.2% greater than that of June 2007, and 0.7% greater than recorded in May 2008.

The company informed that the performance resulted mainly from the entry into operation of new wells linked to the P-52 and P-54 platforms, located in the Roncador Field, at the Campos Basin, in the southeastern coast of the country, and to the Piranema platform, in the coast of the northeastern Brazilian state of Sergipe.

The state-owned company informed as well that new wells also started operating in the fields of Albacora, Albacora Leste and Marlim, all located in the Santos Basin, off the coast of the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo.

Another factor that contributed to this increase, according to the company, was good performance at fields located in the North and Northeast regions and in the state of Espírito Santo (Southeast), where production had decreased last year but resumed growth this year.

With regard to natural gas, the company supplied a daily average of 32.4 million cubic meters in the second quarter of 2008, growth of 36% over the same period last year.

According to Petrobras, performance was influenced by good results in gas production at the Manati Field, in the state of Bahia (Northeast), the entry into operation of other projects and the use of gas at platforms P-52 and P-54.
