Putin Talks About Space Exploration with Brazil

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, poured praise on the Brazilian government as he signed a series of economic cooperation agreements. “The conduct of Brasilia makes it a leader in the contemporary world,” he declared.

Putin was enthusiastic about market opportunities in Brazil and Russia, saying that bilateral trade could easily double or even triple from the present US$ 2 billion annually in a short time.

According to Putin, one of the agreements signed, outlawing double taxation, is a step toward increased trade.

Putin also praised the joint declaration in favor of strengthening the UN in the fight against drugs, terrorism and international crime.

“I am convinced that through our cooperation with Brazil we will make progress in eliminating hunger and poverty around the world,” he said.

The president of Russia also spoke of possible Brazil-Russian joint coooperation endeavors in technology and science, especially space exploration and research, along with the areas of energy and military technology.

Beef Ban

Minister of Agriculture, Roberto Rodrigues, says he hopes that by this weekend Brazil and Russia will be able to resolve the impasse on Brazilian beef exports.

“Although we hoped to resolve this during the Putin visit, I believe it will be taken care of by Friday,” said the Minister.

Rodrigues pointed out that a Russian animal sanitation inspection team has been in Brazil for a week. They are scheduled to travel to the Amazon, where foot and mouth disease has been reported.

In September the Russians suspended imports of most Brazilian beef following a case of foot and mouth disease in the Amazon region. The Russians continue to import beef only from the state of Santa Catarina.
