Brazil Urges Israel to Use Restraint in Gaza Strip

Brazil says it is worried with the developments in Gaza Strip, where 18 Palestinians were killed, this Wednesday, November 8, during an Israeli operation. The Itamaraty, Brazil’s Foreign Relations Ministry asked Israel to show restraint.

The Brazilian government says in a note: "Brazil has been urging the Israeli government to exercise the maximum restraint and to do all it can to protect the lives of innocent civilians".

And the statement continues: "Brazil has also been urging that all actions that may contribute for an escalation of violence in the region should be avoided. The Brazilian government hopes that the Israeli government’s initiative to look into the disproportionate military actions in Beit Hanoun (in Gaza) will bring to Justice those responsible for perpetrating the attack."

The Itamaraty also made an appeal to Palestinians exhorting "the militant Palestinians to cease the attacks against Israeli civilian targets" and reiterating its plea so that  Corporal Gilad Shalit, kidnapped by the Palestinian guerrilla fighters, "be quickly released, which would contribute for a more favorable environment for dialog."

The Brazilian government ends up urging "the Israeli and Palestinian parties to halt the violence spiral, so as to assure the conditions for the resumption of peace negotiations, in conformity with the parameters set by the road map," the peace plan backed by the international community.
