Brazilian Industry Grows Slightly in 9 Regions and Shrinks in 5

Among the 14 regions researched every month by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) industrial production grew in nine regions in the month of August in Brazil.

The states that presented greatest growth, in comparison to July, were Bahia (Brazil Northeast, 3.2%), Goiás (Midwest, 2.1%), Minas Gerais (Southeast, 1.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (also Southeast, 1.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (South, with 0.9%).

The southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo, where the largest industrial park in the country is located, presented a slight expansion of 0.5%, below the national average (0.7%). The state of Amazonas, in the north didn’t show any change.

But there were also states where the industrial production contracted: the most significant reductions were registered in Espí­rito Santo (-5.8%), Pernambuco (-3.0%), Ceará (-2.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.2%).

When compared to August 2005, the national levels of industrial production were positive in 11 regions, with a special performance in Pará (19.1%). The state of Rio Grande do Sul (-2.6%) continued losing production, followed by Amazonas (-1.3%) and the southern state of Paraná (-0.6%).

In the accumulated result for the year, ten of the 14 regions covered by the Monthly Industrial Study of Physical Regional Productivity presented expansion.
