Brazil: Food Sector Helps Paraní¡ Boost Industrial Sales by 4.5%

Sales by industries in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná rose 4.53% between January and August this year, when compared to the same period last year.

The main reason for this increase was the positive performance of the food sector, which has the greatest participation in the state’s economy, representing 34% of total industrial sales by the state of Paraná. In the first eight months of the year, the segment presented expansion of 20.07% when compared to the first eight months of 2005.

The figures are part of a study by the Federation of Industries of the State of Paraná (Fiep). The research was disclosed on Thursday (05). Values in reais (the Brazilian currency) were not informed.

The chemical sector, the third greatest in terms of participation in Paraná state industrial sales (16% of total revenues), also presented a positive behavior. In the period covered, sales presented growth of 7.27%.

The second sector in terms of industrial sales in Paraná did not present a satisfactory performance. The Fiep research reveals that the transport material sector – which includes carmakers and auto parts industries – presented a negative result. The reduction in revenues in the period was 10.12%, when compared to 2005. The sector answers to 19.8% of industrial sales in Paraná.
