Renewable Sources Account for Close to Half of Brazil’s Energy Supply

The share of renewable sources in domestic energy supplies rose to 44.5% in 2005, according to preliminary data from the National Energy Balance, released recently.

According to Maurício Tolmasquim, president of the Energy Research Enterprise (EPE), right now "Brazil is in the global vanguard in this sphere, mainly because of hydroelectric power and energy obtained from sugarcane derivatives."

Tolmasquim pointed out that "nearly half of Brazil’s energy balance corresponds to renewable energy" and that, "if we observe the rest of the world, the average is 13.3%."

The report issued by the EPE indicates that, in comparison with 2004, the domestic supply of renewable energy grew in absolute terms in all the energy sources it comprises.

"The largest source continues to be hydroelectric power, which represents 32.4% of total renewable energy and 14.9% of domestic energy supplies," Tolmasquim added.
