Brazil Expanding Its Oil Interest in Uruguay Beyond their Shell Gas Stations

Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras is examining the development of new business alternatives in partnership with the Uruguayan government in order to expand the company’s activities in that country. This includes the possibility of activities in the area of petroleum exploration and production.

This information was imparted yesterday, July 5, by the president of Petrobras, José Sergio Gabrielli. According to Gabrielli, the possibility of activities in the area of petroleum exploration and production in Uruguay will be the object of studies that will be developed by the Brazilian government-run company and the Uruguay state petroleum enterprise, ANCAP.

The idea, he says, is to form a partnership with ANCAP to expand and modernize the La Teja refinery and use it to process heavy petroleum from the Marlin Field in the Campos Basin (Rio de Janeiro).

The Uruguayan Minister of Mines and Energy, Jorge Lepra, said that he regards the partnership with the Brazilian state petroleum company as very important and capable of contributing to his country’s industrial development.

Petrobras is active in gas distribution in Uruguay, and it recently acquired Shell’s network of distribution and sales outlets for petroleum derivatives in that country.

These declarations were made at Petrobras headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, where the governments of the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding for bilateral energy integration.
