Petrobras Invests US$ 16 Bi to Reduce Brazil’s Gas Dependency

Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras hopes to arrive at the year of 2010 with a natural gas supply of about 100 million barrels per day, of which 65% to be produced by the company itself and 35% imported from Bolivia.

For such, the company plans on investing US$ 16 billion in the next few years – US$ 8.8 billion in production and US$ 5 billion in the area of infrastructure for transportation of the product and in distribution and development.

The information was given by the director of Energy and Gas at the company, Ildo Sauer. According to him, Petrobras has a vigorous investments program in the field of natural gas in Brazil with the aim of becoming less dependent on the imported product.

"This also implies investments in the next 10 years of US$ 10 billion to US$ 12 billion in projects of natural gas production development in the Santos Basin. To have an exact idea of the importance of this increase, it is worth recalling that last year the volume of gas sold to the market was between 40 and 42 million cubic meters per day, therefore an increase in the supply by more than 100%," he said.

Brazil currently imports between 24 and 30 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from Bolivia, which corresponds to about 50% in the internal demand.
