With 13 Million Small Businesses, Brazil Is World’s 7th Most Enterprising Country

Brazil is the seventh most enterprising country in the world. This information was disclosed in a study by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), which measures the level of entrepreneurship in 37 nations.

Brazil, whose level of entrepreneurship is 11.3%, only loses to countries like Venezuela (25%), Thailand (20,7%), New Zealand (17.6%), Jamaica (17%), China (13.7%) and the United States (12.4%).

These results were presented Tuesday morning, March 14, at the offices of the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), in Brazilian capital Brasília.

The GEM study, based on the year of 2005, reveals that in Brazil there are 13 million enterprises in initial phases, which have been in operation for up to three and a half years.

Six million of the people researched answered that they opened businesses due to market opportunities and seven million due to work needs.

"Brazilian entrepreneurship has been gaining space on the world market, and it is even greater than that of the country considered the one with the greatest entrepreneurial mentality in the world, the United States," stated the technical director of the National Sebrae, Luiz Carlos Barboza. Small businesses are also lasting longer. Sixty percent survive between 10 and 15 years.

This year the research also pointed out that 27% of the Brazilians opening new business have invested in the food sector, followed by the garment sector, which answered to 14% of new businesses.

Participation of Brazilian women in the enterprising sector grows every day. According to a new research by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), female entrepreneurship in Brazil is the seventh most active in the world.

It loses only to the levels of Venezuela (23.86%), Thailand (19.33 %), Jamaica (15.69 %), New Zealand (13.75 %) and China (11.6%).

Considering figures collected between 2001 and 2005, it may be said that there are more male entrepreneurs in Brazil (58%) than female (42%). The GEM report, however, states that female activities are fundamental for the prominent Brazilian performance in the world ranking.

São Paulo is going to create the Park of Entrepreneurial Talent, place that will serve to open youngsters to entrepreneurship and development of new companies. The project is by the National Confederation of Young Entrepreneurs (Conaje) and will be taken ahead in a partnership with the State Secretariat for Youth, Sports and Leisure.

The measure was announced this Wednesday, March 15, during the 10th World Summit of Young Entrepreneurs, which is taking place at the Anhembi, in São Paulo. The project will demand investments worth US$ 68,600 and will be implemented in four months in the place where the former Carandiru Penitentiary Center was located.
