Brazil Goes to Israel and Syria Looking for Partners in Education

The Minister of Education of Brazil, Fernando Haddad, arrived in Israel this Wednesday, March 1st, the third day of a trip to three Middle East countries.

The objective is to discuss partnerships and cooperation agreements, especially in higher education areas. The trip started Monday, February 27, in Beirut, Lebanon.

On February 28, Haddad was in Damascus, Syria, where he met that country’s Minister of Education to discuss, among other issues, ways of stimulating the study of Arabic in Brazilian universities, as well as Portuguese in Syrian universities.

There is already an educational and cultural agreement, signed on December 3rd, 2003 between the two countries, on this and other subjects, which was put into effect on January 1st, 2004.

This Ash Wednesday, the Brazilian Minister had meetings with authorities of Israel’s Ministry of Education and Foreign Relations, in Jerusalem.

Thursday, March 2, he will get together with the President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and afterwards, he will go to Tel Aviv, to meet with representatives of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports.

During the trip, Fernando Haddad is also discussing agreements on distance learning, technical, and professional education.
