Scared of Bird Flu, Chicken Farmers in Brazil Demand Prompt Action by Government

The Brazilian Association of Chicken Exporters (ABEF), Monday, February 20, urged the federal government to move quickly in the implementation of the Bird Flu Prevention Plan.

The breeders also expressed their concern over the threat of a strike next month by health inspectors.

"The sector continues to await the implementation of the Bird Flu Prevention Plan, which contains indispensable measures such as the ban on interstate poultry transportation.

"The government must discover legal solutions to adopt immediately the measures required to contain an eventual outbreak," affirmed the executive president of the ABEF, Ricardo Gonçalves, in a press release.

The note recommends "a cautious stance throughout 2006, since the discovery of new focuses of bird flu in Asia, Europe, and Africa, as well, stirs up adverse consumer reactions in various markets."

In the note, the ABEF also expresses "concern over the decision by health inspectors to go on strike, as of March 3" and over the sector’s loss of export competitiveness due to the continuous appreciation of the real vis-à-vis the US dollar.
