Brazil Raises Women Trafficking Theme at World Social Forum

The head of the Brazilian Special Secretariat of Women’s Policies (SPM), Minister Nilcéa Freire, is representing Brazil today at the 6th World Social Forum, in Caracas, Venezuela.

Together with other ministers and feminist leaders from all over Latin America, she is participating in the panel discussion, Women, Participatory and Communal Ways of Life and Experiences to Improve People’s Lives.

The main themes of the panel are women’s challenges in the world of work, their participation in society, and their role in the promotion of peace and cooperation among nations.

Freire will also take part in discussions on immigration and human trafficking in the panel, The Treatment of People: A Transnational Problem that Requires Transnational Responses.

Thursday, January 26, the Minister will participate in the workshop, The Treatment of People and Migration Policies – The Paradox of Government Policies on Human Trafficking, where she will speak about the trafficking of Brazilian women and illegal immigration.

Freire will discuss the effort developed by the secretariat in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice to train police and legal professionals – judges and prosecutors – in the war on this kind of trafficking.

The minister will participate in these activities as a guest of the Women’s International Democratic Federation, an organization with representatives in nearly every Latin American country.
