Discrete Growth in Brazil’s Industry Does Not Reverse Declining Trend

Brazilian industrial production had an increase in 0.6% in November. In the accumulated value from January to November 2005, industrial production grew by 3.1%.

According to the information on monthly industrial production, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the annualized rate – accumulated in the twelve months that ended in November – was of 3.5%, against 4.1% in October.

The good performance of 15 out of the 23 branches researched had in the foodstuff industry (2.2%), machinery, electrical material and appliances (5.3%), rubber and plastic (2.9%) and toiletries, soaps and cleaning products (6.1%) the main contributions to the expansion in industrial production in November.

The main negative influences came from chemical products (-1.9%), electronic materials and communications equipment (-4.1%), oil refinery and alcohol production (-1.5%) and tobacco (-9.1%).

According to the IBGE, the figures for November 2005 show a discrete increase in the industry’s productive rhythm, which for two months has shown positive rates.

"Since these results do not recover the drop observed from August to September (-2.2%), the suave acceleration in the months of October and November didn’t reverse the declining path seen in the index," said the statement by the IBGE.
