Lula Says Brazil Remains Committed to Haiti and Will Probe General’s Death

In a note, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed profound sadness at the death of the head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) the Brazilian general, Urano Bacellar.

Lula went on to declare that Brazilian troops in Haiti will continue their work and that the Brazilian government is "determined to move ahead in assisting the people of Haiti rebuild the country, return to peace and political normality."

The note also says that the Brazilian government will investigate the death of general Bacellar.

Elections

The Haitian Temporary Election Board has set a new election date: February 7. The elections for president and the legislature, which have been postponed four times, will be organized and run by the election board, the UN and the Organization of American States (OAS).

One of the problems is that there are 3.5 million eligible voters in Haiti but only one million have been able to register. Although the vote is not mandatory in Haiti, voters have to be registered in order to cast ballots.
