Brazil Ships 13,000 Live Cattle to Lebanon

Another 13,000 live cattle were embarked, Wednesday, November 2, from the port of Rio Grande, in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, bound for Lebanon.

This is the fourth shipment of live cattle, of a total of 40,000 head acquired from Rio Grande do Sul cattle ranchers by a Jordanian company, destined for countries in the Middle East.

According to José Luiz Subirana, director of the International Livestock Import and Export Commerce, Ltd., company, technical personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture and the State Department of Agriculture are inspecting the animals’ health. The first shipment, of 8500 head – a theretofore unprecedented operation in the state – occurred in March of this year.

The animals’ voyage aboard the corral-ship Kenoz takes 20 days to the port of Beirut.

The outbreak of hoof and mouth disease in early October in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul led 49 countries to impose embargoes on Brazilian meat.
