Brazilian Government Rules Out Blackouts in Foreseeable Future

The president of Eletrobrás – Brazilian Electrical Centrals, S.A. – AloÀsio Vasconcelos, ruled out any possibility of energy shortages in Brazil in 2007 in consequence of the growth that has been registered in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Not in 2006, nor in 2007, nor in 2008, nor, we believe, from then on. With the new projects, we can transmit serenity to the Brazilian population,” he guaranteed.

In Vasconcelos’ view, Brazil will not experience energy shortages, thanks to the programs the federal government has been developing in the electricity sector.

“Eletrobrás has planning, and, besides this, we develop programs to combat waste,” he said.

Vasconcelos said he believes that Eletrobrás is fulfilling its role, providing energy to the country in sufficient quantity and quality and fostering the social insertion of 12 million Brazilians who are still without electricity in their homes, through the Light for All Program, which also charges lower rates,” he explained.
