Almost US$ 15 Million Fine for Oil Spill in Brazil

The Oceanus Maritime Agency, responsible for the Bahamian-flag ship, the Saga Mascot, which spilled oil in Guanabara Bay, Rio, Brazil, on Saturday, September 3, and the Enave/Renave shipyard were each fined US$ 4.3 million (10 million reais).

The punishment was admnistered by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).

These fines are in addition to ones totaling US$ 5.16 million (R$ 12 million) issued by the Rio State Department of the Environment, based on the findings of the State Environmental Engineering Foundation (Feema).

According to the Ibama technicians, the absence of measures to avert the accident and flaws in the operation of the tugboats were the main problems determining the definition of the fine.
