Norway’s Telenor Gets Green Light in Brazil to Sell Directly to Clients

Norway-based Telenor Satellite Services announced that it received approval from the Brazilian government to begin offering Inmarsat satellite services directly to service providers and their customers throughout Brazil.

The official announcement appeared in the Diário Oficial da União, the official government record publication of the Brazilian government on July 25th.

This announcement successfully completes a negotiations process begun in 2002 with Inmarsat, Embratel, and the Brazilian government to authorize Telenor to sell directly to service providers and their customers in Brazil.

Prior to this approval, Telenor Satellite Services was able to sell Inmarsat service in country only through state-sponsored service provider Embratel.

“Telenor is extremely pleased with the Brazilian government’s action to approve Telenor as a provider of Inmarsat services in Brazil,” said Tore Hilde, chief executive officer of Telenor Satellite Services.

“Now, we can offer our complete portfolio of ‘on demand’ Inmarsat satellite services to service providers in Brazil and their customers needing reliable communications on land, at sea, and while in flight.”

To meet the anticipated sales growth in Brazil, Telenor has already established an office in Rio de Janeiro.

Telenor Satellite Services is a subsidiary of Telenor ASA of Norway, listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, Telenor is an international provider of high quality telecommunications, data and media communication services. Telenor is one of Norway’s largest companies with 2004 revenues of approximately  US$ 9.1 billion and a workforce of 20,900 located in Norway and abroad.

Telenor Satellite Services owns and operates a global network of teleports located at Eik (Norway) and Southbury (Connecticut) and Santa Paula (California) in the United States, and operates VSAT hubs at facilities in Nittedal (Norway) and Prague (Czech Rep).

The company uses the satellite systems of Inmarsat, Intelsat, Iridium, New Skies, Satmex, Spacecom, Thuraya and Telenor’s own satellites for its services.
