Brazil’s New Eletrobrí¡s Chief Wants to Go Global

AloÀsio Vasconcelos, who took office yesterday as the new president of Eletrobrás – Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras S.A. – declared that his goal is to insert the state-run holding company in international markets.

That, he declared, will mean a corporation which must be prepared to engage in more dynamic negotiations.

Vasconcelos said the corporation would meet the government’s target of providing another 12 million Brazilians with electricity by 2008 as part of the Light for Everyone program.

Vasconcelos was the Eletrobrás director for Special Projects. He substitutes Silas Rondeau, who is the new Minister of Mines and Energy.

While Rondeau was head of Eletrobrás, US$ 12 million was invested in a program to reduce the amount of electricity Brazilians waste, another US$ 5 million in technological development, and US$ 3.8 million in partnership projects with universities, research centers and industries.
