US$ 4 Million Worth of Chinese Pirate Goods Destroyed in Brazil

Thousands of false watches and fashion accessories, along with around 800,000 pirate CDs, will be destroyed today at the port of Recife, Porto de Suape, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, in the Brazilian Northeast.

The merchandise was apprehended in a joint operation called “Yellow Sea” by revenue inspectors and federal police agents. The goods, worth around US$ 4 million (10 million reais), came from China.

Approximately 1.5 million counterfeit CDs were destroyed in a public act held July 15 in the Charles Miller Plaza in São Paulo. The CDs were apprehended in operations carried out in the capital and cities in the interior of the state.

According to Brazil’s Association for the Protection of Intellectual and Recording Rights (APDIF), which organized the event, the destruction of the CDs “marks the beginning of a new offensive by the APDIF in the war on piracy.”

The association expects that surveillance and police actions will be reinforced to suppress this trade.

The anti-piracy campaign, which the APDIF refers to as Operation Pressure, is intended to remove counterfeit CDs and DVDs from illegal commercial outlets.

According to the association’s press office, seizures of around 13 million pirated CDs have been registered this year.

From the standpoint of the association, however, what can be observed in the streets is that the offer of illegal products keeps on growing, and this has had an impact on legitimate markets.
