Brazil and Paraguay Sign Treaty to Fight Piracy

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met yesterday, June 20, with the President of Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte Frutos, in Assunción.

Lula arrived in the Paraguayan capital June 19 to participate in the 28th Mercosur Summit Meeting, in which the member countries – Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay – and the associated countries – Chile and Bolivia – discussed topics on their mutual agenda.

One of these topics is the creation of a fund to finance social and infrastructure projects. The idea is to reduce economic inequalities that exist in the region.

Yesterday, Paraguay transferred the temporary presidency of the Mercosur to Uruguay, which will be entrusted with the implementation of commitments to be agreed upon by the heads of State.

Lula and Duarte also signed a bilateral agreement to combat piracy in the two countries.
