Brazil Fines Forest Burner US$ 410,000

Brazil’s Ibama (Environmental Protection Institute) has slapped a US$ 410,000 (1,331,000 reais) fine on Compensados Itamarati, a lumber firm, for burning over 180 hectares of a wildlife reserve in the state of Paraná.

The burned area is part of a 16,445 hectares wildlife reserve known as Campos de Palmas. Part of the burned area was being planted with trees that would be used for lumber in the future.

According to the local Ibama superintendent, Marino Gonçalves, the area that was destroyed contained threatened species of wildlife and the fine was based on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites).
