Brazil Notifies the US: It Still Wants a UN Seat

Following the US government’s declaration of support for the creation of new permanent seats on the United Nations (UN) Security Council, the Brazilian government reiterated that, in conjunction with the G4 (a group that comprises Germany, Brazil, India, and Japan), it will continue striving to obtain one of the Council seats.

On Friday, June 17, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, affirmed that “Brazil remains steadfast in the G4 proposal, and the Brazilian government intends to maintain a dialogue with all countries, including the United States.”

Although the American proposal also calls for the addition of new members to the UN Security Council, it is less ambitious than what the G4 has suggested.

Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan want the Council to be expanded by around 25 members (11 permanent and 14 temporary ones).

The United States, for its part, backs the admission of two permanent members, including one from Japan and one from a developing country, and two or three temporary ones.
