Brazilian Congressman Says Bribe Accusations Are Baseless

The president of the PL party, deputy Valdemar Costa Neto, attacked Brazilian congressman Roberto Jefferson’s testimony in the Ethics Commission in which he accused Lula’s top advisers of having created a bribery scheme to get congressional backing.

“What he said was a case of defamation of the Congress. He did not name the deputies who received the ‘monthly allowance.'” Costa Neto declared that his party, contrary to what Jefferson says, never received money.

“He (Jefferson) did not say anything new in his testimony. He just made accusations. He has not proven anything he said. He just accuses. He is just an accuser,” said Costa Neto.

According to Costa Neto, Jefferson is blackmailing the government and business community “because he refuses to go down alone.”

Costa Neto declared that Jefferson will be expelled from Congress because he cannot prove his accusations.

Today, the investigative commission installed by the Chamber of Deputies Legal Office (Corregedoria) will also hear testimony by deputy Jefferson.

The commission will be looking into the supposed involvement of Jefferson in malfeasance at the Post Office (ECT, Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos) and the state-run Reinsurance Institute (IRB, Instituto de Resseguros do Brasil) .
