Dekasseguis Send More than US$ 1 Billion a Year to Brazil

The 280 thousand Brazilians currently living in Japan – almost all Japanese descents, called dekasseguis – are an important source of foreign exchange credits for Brazil.

So, Brazil is determined to maintain a stronger and constant presence of Banco do Brasil (Bank of Brazil, BB) in that country, as affirmed its International Director, Augusto Braúna Pinheiro.

During a meeting with Japanese entrepreneurs, he informed that BB has been operating in Japan for 33 years, and in the last 15 years it has focused on the Brazilian community working there.

Last year, over 60% of all money transfers from the dekasseguis to their families in Brazil were made through BB, totaling US$ 900 million, added Pinheiro.

In addition to services in the main cities of Japan, Pinheiro also said that BB offers assistance to Japanese people arriving in Brazil, as well as business orientation to dekasseguis coming back to Brazil.

According to Pinheiro, BB is always involved, in some way, in social support measures for Brazilians residing in Japan. The Bank’s presence will soon be expanded to Seoul, South Korea.
