Brazil and Barbados Agree Haiti’s Violence Must End

The Minister of Foreign Relations of Barbados, Billie Miller, praised Brazil’s performance in Haiti, and thanked the Brazilian government for its efforts in the MINUSTAH leadership, the United Nations (UN) peace force in that country.

This declaration was included in the joint note Minister Miller and Brazilian Chancellor, Celso Amorim, issued this Tuesday, May 17, after bilateral meeting at the Barbadian parliament headquarters.

In the document, the ministers manifest preoccupation with the violence in Haiti, and consider essential an improvement in the situation in the near future.

Billie Miller reiterated the commitment of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) in helping the Haitian people, especially through technical support during elections, expected for the end of this year.

Amorim and Miller also acknowledged, according to the note, the importance of a multilateral system, and the fundamental role of the UN in the peace and security keeping process, as well as in the promotion of social and economic development.

The UN reform, in particular regarding the Security Council, was also a point of agreement between the two chancellors.

They share the opinion that the UN Security Council must be reformed to increase its representativeness, balance, and legitimacy, with the inclusion of developing countries among its permanent members.

Celso Amorim handed to Minister Billie Miller a letter from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressed to Barbados’ Prime Minister, Owen Arthur, inviting him to visit Brazil.
