Brazil and Algeria Urge Israel’s Complete Withdrawal

The South America – Arab Countries Summit “fulfilled its goal of strengthening the interregional dialogue and setting an agenda of cooperation for the promotion of economic and social development on sustainable bases.”

This affirmation is part of a joint declaration released by Presidents Lula and Abdelaziz Bouteflika, of Algeria.

Trade relations between Brazil and Algeria were one of the main topics discussed by the Presidents, but social issues were also broached.

Lula once again requested the Algerian government’s engagement in the war on hunger, and Bouteflika asked the Brazilian government for more efficacy in the global struggle against terrorism.

The two Presidents also emphasized the need for reform in the United Nations, especially the Security Council, to make it more representative with the participation of permanent representatives from African and Latin American countries.

The Palestine question was also mooted at the meeting. According to the declaration, the two heads of State “recalled the need to materialize the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, notably the establishment of an independent and sovereign State.”

The note goes on to say that “they reaffirmed the need for Israel to withdraw from all occupied Arab territories.”
