Brazil Vows Better Pay for Teachers

The Brazilian government will invest more resources on education. According to the Minister of Education, Tarso Genro, all government programs together add up to more than US$ 120 million (300 million reais).

He says that two issues worry his Ministry: the creation and training of teachers, especially of Portuguese and Math, and the refinancing of basic education.

“Structural measures for teachers’ recycling programs will be maximized by states and municipalities, through resources of the Fundeb (Basic Education Development Fund),” said the Minister.

Tarso Genro reminded that in four years Fundeb must have US$ 1.6 billion (4.3 billion reais) available, 60% of which will be used to increase teachers salaries, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.

The Minister participated this Wednesday, May 4, on the opening ceremony of the 10th National Forum of Municipal Directors for Education, in Brasília.

The Forum gathered more than 1,000 experts to debate citizens’ right to quality education.
