Indians Get Electricity in Brazil. 10 Million People Still Lack It.

The conclusion of the electrification project in the Indian village of Escalvado, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, has made electricity available to around 2.1 thousand Kanela Indians, thanks to the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s “Light for All” program.

The coordinator of the program, Edmilson Carneiro, underlined the program’s benefits.

“It goes beyond improving the quality of life of people who live in the countryside. It also fosters development, generating jobs and income,” he said.

He went on to say that the program is a tool that contributes to the elimination of poverty.

According to Carneiro, the electric installations up to the residences are free for low-income families.

The “Light for All” program has already reached 125 thousand homes, benefiting around 625 thousand people.

US$ 2.9 million (7.4 million reais) will be invested to take care of the approximately 10 million rural Brazilians who lack electricity.

The program works in partnership with energy distributors and state governments.
