South American Community of Nations Coming in September

The Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, said that the meeting of South American presidents to formalize the South American Community of Nations should occur in the second fortnight of September.

Prior to this, on August 1-2, the chancellors of the countries in the region will meet once again to define the terms of the Community’s Constituent Charter, which will be submitted to the presidents for approval.

Three declarations were issued yesterday by the chancellors. They express concern over the political crisis in Ecuador, declare their countries’ support of Peru’s candidacy for a temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council, and compliment Venezuela for its independence day, which will be commemorated in July.

According to Amorim, who hosted the encounter, the meeting was fruitful. “For the first time we exchanged ideas on the tasks and the institutionalization of the South American Community,” he said.

The South American Community of Nations unites the countries of the region in a project based on political, economic, physical, and commercial integration.

The idea of creating the bloc was launched at the Rio Group Summit Meeting last November and formalized in December, in the Peruvian city of Cuzco – which is why Peru exercises the role of pro tem secretariat.

The basic principles of the Community were presented in Cuzco and will be authorized at the presidential meeting set for September.
