Brazil-Chile Summit Urges More Union in South America

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed satisfaction with Chile’s President Ricardo Lagos’ decision to extend his trip to Colombia and Venezuela.

The decision was made after the two presidents talked about the consolidation of the South American Community of Nations.

“Even though we are very close geographically, we need to have many conversations, dialogues in order to consolidate, as the European Union did, into a strong South American community in all aspects,” said Lula.

During a meeting requested by Lagos, they also discussed the improvement on Brazil-Chile relations, and the United Nations (UN) structural reform.

According to Lula, “we all agree that now the UN needs to represent the 21st Century and not 1945.”

Lula affirmed that Brazil will keep supporting Chilean’s candidature for the Organization of American States (OAS) General Secretariat.

There were already five voting rounds, and in all of them there was a tie between Chile’s Minister of Interior, José Miguel Inzulza, and Mexican chancellor, Luis Ernesto Derbez.

The new round is scheduled for May 2nd, in Washington (USA). “We support our Chilean friend, Inzulza, who may certainly have a great job heading the OAS,” affirmed Lula.
