In Africa, Lula Gets Backing of Cameroon for Brazil’s UN Ambitions

President Lula left this morning to Nigeria, the second stop of his African trip, after staying one day in the Republic of Cameroon. Today, Lula will have a private meeting with the President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, in his office.

The Brazilian President will also have a second more extended meeting with the Nigerian leader. At night, President Lula will be the guest of honor in a dinner offered by the Nigerian President.


In a joint announcement released today, in Yaounde, Presidents of Brazil and Cameroon reaffirmed their support to the United Nations (UN) reform, and to the need of expanding the UN Security Council.


President Paul Biya of Cameroon manifested his defense of Brazil’s candidature for a permanent seat in the Council. The announcement informs that Brazil and Cameroon are negotiating agreements, especially in the area of sports, that should be concluded in August.


During this visit, the two presidents signed agreements in the agriculture, public health, and education areas.


Brazil will transfer to that country technology in the cultivation of cacao, the most traditional agricultural practice in Cameroon.


In the public health area, Brazil will share its experience in the combat of HIV and other epidemics. In the education sector, the exchange of university teachers and students will be stimulated.
