‘Brazil Is Not Nuclear,’ Says Balloon Crisscrossing the Country

The environmental organization, Greenpeace, launched the campaign “Brazil is not nuclear” to protest plans by the Brazilian nuclear program to revive the project for construction of the Angra 3 nuclear plant.

A balloon displaying the campaign slogan will travel to various locations, aiming to control the expenditures that Lula’s Administration has been allotting to this type of energy.

“This investment that the government is making could be better applied on social projects,” said the director of the campaign, Marcelo Furtado.

According to Furtado, the nuclear source is expensive and unnecessary in Brazil, which has a great energy potential.

He informed that a 2004 opinion poll on the country’s need for another nuclear plant indicated that over 80% of the interviewees were opposed.

The balloon began its journey in Brasília and will then proceed to Goiânia, the city where an accident occurred several years ago involving radioactive cesium, causing the death and contamination of various victims.

The campaign will then move on to the Northeast, North, and South. The balloon’s travels will end in May, in São Paulo.
