Brazil: FAO Wants Closer Ties Between Davos and WSF

The representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Brazil, José Tubino, said, yesterday, January 31, that closer ties must be created between the World Social Forum (WSF) and the Economic Forum in Davos.

Tubino proposes an encounter between the organizers of the two events. He explains: “It’s important for the Social Forum to make a gesture so that the Forum in Davos can, in some way, respond to the uneasiness and problems that are being identified in Porto Alegre.”

This was the first time the FAO participated in the WSF. Tubino observed that the Forum deals with an enormous variety of issues, and the major ones are not debated in a very profound manner.

For this reason, he thinks that, in the future, greater focus must be placed on questions that are vital to mankind, such as the Goals of the Millenium, the problem of global warming, hunger, poverty, and work.

The FAO’s participation in the event comprehended debates on how civil society can contribute in the elaboration of nutritional security programs.

The agency invited members of the International Alliance Against Hunger from various countries, such as Haiti, the United States, Indonesia, and Bolivia.

The organization’s representatives hope to weave national alliances and a worldwide networkk for the war on hunger.
