Brazil Brings Heavyweights to Davos to Lure Investors

On January 29, around 100 European, American, and Asian investors will attend a meeting organized by the Brazilian government, in Davos, Switzerland.

The purpose is to convince these entrepreneurs that Brazil is prepared to receive investments. Similar sessions were held last year in Geneva and New York.

This will be the third “Brazil and Partners: Investment Opportunities” seminar, held abroad to attract foreign investment. The seminar will be held simultaneously with the World Economic Forum.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to arrive in Davos on the 28th, two days after the start of the world’s most important capitalist encounter.

The presidential entourage will include the Ministers of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade, Luiz Fernando Furlan; Finance, Antônio Palocci; the Chief of Presidential Civilian Advisory Staff, José Dirceu; Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim; and the president of the Central Bank, Henrique Meirelles.

During the seminar, which should keep the president occupied nearly the entire day he will spend in Davos, the Brazilian government wants to show the foreigners the changes that have occurred in the country since Lula’s last participation in Davos, in January, 2003, when he launched the campaign to combat hunger and extreme poverty throughout the world.

To persuade the entrepreneurs that the country has become a safe haven for investments, the Brazilian government will emphasize topics like energy, infrastructure, construction, and industrial policy.

The seminar will be attended by important personalities, such as the global president of HP, Carly Fiorina, and the presidents of Bunge, Alberto Weisser, and Alcoa, Alain Belda.

Following the inauguration of the meeting, at the Hotel Belvedere, by President Lula, the first to present the investors with the advantages of investing in Brazil will be Minister Antônio Palocci.

He will talk about the steps taken to reduce the cost of investments and the resumption of industrial production and employment.

Then, the president of the Central Bank, Henrique Meirelles, will discuss the theme “Brazil and the Construction of Sustained Growth.”

Minister Furlan, the third speaker, will speak about investment opportunities in Brazil. The cycle of presentations will conclude with Minister José Dirceu, who will discuss “New Bases for Sustainable Development.”
