More Jobs and Better Wages in Brazil 2004

Brazil’s industrial employment registered stabiliy in November, 2004, compared with October. This finding of the Monthly Industrial Survey of Employment and Salaries, referring to last November, was just announced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

When compared with November, 2003, there was a 4.2% growth. In the cumulative result for 2004, through November, the variation in industrial employment amounted to 1.7%, while the overall figure for the 12-month period through November showed a rise of 1.4%.

In the November year-to-year comparison, hirings outstripped firings in 13 of the 14 locations included in the survey. São Paulo was especially noteworthy, with increases in 11 sectors, among them machinery and equipment, up 25.7%, and food and beverages, up 12.4%.

With respect to workers’ salaries, the November year-to-year comparison shows a 6.9% improvement.

The results were positive in all the locations surveyed, again with special mention going to São Paulo, where the increase amounted to 6.8%.

Workers’ salaries throughout 2004 have evidenced positive results due to gains in the salary mass and the decline in inflation rates.

“These salary gains stem from the expansion of industrial activity, the positive movement of industry this year,” informed the economist Denise Cordovil, of the Coordination of Industry of the IBGE.
