Brazil Debuts 17-Million-Strong National Directory of Businesses

Brazil's Wheaton company The Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade in order to cater to demands for information from public organizations, companies and other institutions concerning the Brazilian entrepreneurial universe,  has elaborated the program National Directory of Companies (CNE), which already counts on data for 17 million national and foreign companies operating in Brazil.

Developed by the General Coordination for Modernization and Computing (CGMI) of the Ministry, the system brings the following advantages: trustworthiness, and broad access to up-to-date information; centralization of national data in one single place; identification of regional vocations; and reduction of time and cost for businessmen when registering a company.

According to a press release, the secretary for Commerce and Services at the ministry, Edson Lupatini Junior, said that the first version of the application covers 200 years of mercantile registers in Brazil and contains, among other information, addresses, social capital, date of entry into operation, branches of foreign companies, blocs, accounting books, current status of enterprises, branches in different states, juridical nature and other entrepreneurial data.

At first, the data will only be available to organizations operating under the National Department of Mercantile Registers (DNRC), which is linked to the Ministry of Development. As of March 4, 2009, the system will be available to the general public.

The new system brings together information supplied by the country's 27 commercial registries and is connected with the National Registry System for Mercantile Companies (Sinrem).

In the future, the application is going to be linked to the National Network for Simplification of Registry and Legislation for Companies and Businesses (Redesim), which is going to make it easier for individual businessmen and mercantile societies to provide registry information to other organizations in the area of mercantile registry, as all of the information is going to be available in one single system.
