For Brazilian President, Obama’s Victory Would Be Spark of Joy to the World

Barack Obama The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said that if American senator Barack Obama is finally elected as the next president of the United States, it would be "something extraordinary", comparable to his own victory or that of Bolivia's Evo Morales, the first indigenous president, plus a "spark of joy" for the expectant world.

"The same way Brazil voted in a metallurgic worker, Bolivia an indigenous, Venezuela paratrooper Chavez and Paraguay a bishop (Fernando Lugo) I think it is something extraordinary that the largest economy in the world could have an Afro-American president", said Lula da Silva during his weekend visit to Cuba.

"I also think the whole world is expecting with a spark of joy and hope that moment, even in each of our silent minds we have that expectation: a black man was elected president of the most powerful country in the world".

Lula da Silva added that Latinamerica is going through an "extraordinary period" almost unique in which for the first time "left-wing groups are currently in command in so many countries" and "we hope something similar for our neighbor from the north".

"Let's hope this happens with the world's largest economy", he underlined although admitting that he doesn't know very well either the Democrat Obama or the Republican candidate, John McCain.
