For the fifth time in his 42-year career, Veloso will come to the Los Angeles area. This time he will showcase his talent at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in the city of Pasadena, on Wednesday, November 14, at 8 pm.
His debut in 1997 at the Pantages Theatre, in Los Angeles, with Fina Estampa, and in his first ever US Tour with the release of the 1999 Grammy Award Winning Livro garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Born on August 7, 1942, he's a native of Santo Amaro da Purificação, in Bahia state, in the Brazilian Northeast, Caetano Veloso is one of the most important figures in contemporary Brazilian music.
The Grammy Award winning artist is arguably Brazil's greatest contemporary songwriter and is among the most significant individuals still active to come out of the late 60's MPB (Brazilian Popular Music).
The foundation of Veloso's intensely eclectic music is the rich Bahian musical heritage that was influenced by Caribbean, African and North American pop music and the cool seductive bossa nova sound exemplified by João Gilberto.
Jon Pareles, from The New York Times described Veloso as "one of the greatest songwriters of the century: a master melodist, a lyricist who merges surreal imagery with a sense of history and a sense of humor, a singer whose voice radiates tenderness and supple swing and a musician who connects to traditional music, pop and jazz from all over."
A founder of Brazil's genre-crossing Tropicália movement in the '60s, he continues to blend new styles in the 21st century – as heard on his rock-infused new CD.
Caetano Veloso's Cê, his latest work, was released by Nonesuch Records on January 23, 2007. The record includes twelve original songs by Veloso (vocals, nylon and steel guitars), who recorded them in the spring and summer of 2006 with a rock band of younger musicians: Pedro Sá (electric guitar), Ricardo Dias Gomes (bass, Rhodes piano), and Marcelo Callado (drums); it was produced by Sá and Moreno Veloso, the composer's son.
Additionally, Pedro's brother, Jonas Sá, sings guest vocals on one track. Cê was released in Brazil in the fall of 2006.
Commenting on Cê, Caetano says, "Cê is not a rock album like the ones I listen to and that interest me: the songs are mine, my voice is still the same, my hair is grayer than it is black, less curly and always shorter than when it was."
