Brazil and Neighbors Open Mercosur Parliament for Business

Mercosur flag Brazil's Speaker of the House, Arlindo Chinaglia, and the President of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, are joining, today, May 7, in the ceremonies for the establishment of the Mercosur Parliament, at the National Assembly in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay.

The Parliament will have representatives from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, as full members, and from Venezuela. Venezuela will have a seat as a member in the process of adhesion, with the right to speech. The Brazilian representation will count on the participation of nine senators and nine federal representatives.

The president of the commission of Brazilian representatives, senator Sérgio Zambiasi, explained last week that the parliament is going to deal with "issues pertaining to the daily life of the communities and borders, cultural relations, and the preservation of democracy."

According to him, tomorrow, May 8, a plenary meeting will be held to appoint the representatives for the commissions.

The senators appointed as honorary members are: Sérgio Zambiasi, Pedro Simon, Geraldo Mesquita Júnior, Efraim Morais, Romeu Tuma, Marisa Serrano, Aloizio Mercadante, Cristovam Buarque, and Inácio Arruda.

The representatives appointed as honorary members are: Cezar Schirmer, Dr. Rosinha, George Hilton, Max Rosenmann, Cláudio Diaz, Geraldo Resende, Germano Bonow, Beto Albuquerque, and José Paulo Tóffano.
