Brazil’s Daniela Mercury and NY’s Orchard Seal It with a Song Deal

The Orchard, a company specialized in distributing and marketing independent music, announced that it has signed digital distribution and marketing agreements with Trama Records and Brazilian pop star Daniela Mercury.

"The music of Trama and Daniela Mercury is some of the most sought-after Brazilian music in the world," said Greg Scholl, chief executive of The Orchard.

"In a year when Brazil stands proudly as host country for one of the music industry’s leading international conferences, it is a great privilege to usher some of Brazil’s best music – music that is timeless, and with worldwide appeal – into digital retailers and mobile operators globally."

"The Orchard is unquestionably the vanguard of the music industry," said Leticia Montalvo and Lian Calvo Serrano of Tempest Entertainment, Daniela Mercury’s international management.

"In entrusting Daniela’s work to The Orchard and its exceptional team, we are confident that the entire universe will finally be able to enjoy her fire, musicality, and immense talent."

Trama was founded in 1998 in São Paulo by entrepreneurs André and Claudio Szajman and producer/musician João Marcello Bôscoli. A cutting-edge and artist-friendly label, Trama has attracted some of Brazil’s most iconic artists to its ranks, including Tropicália pioneers Gal Costa and Tom Zé, established acts like Nação Zumbi and Max de Castro, and rising stars Fernanda Porto and Mombojo.

Trama also operates an independent distribution organization whose roster includes the Eldorado label. Trama was among the first Brazilian music companies to embrace the Internet as a means of exposure and distribution and has recently created www.tramavirtual.com.br, a free online resource for independent artists who want to make their music available to the public.

A native of Salvador – capital of the Brazilian northeastern state of Bahia – a city world famous for its annual Carnaval, Daniela Mercury is an international pop star and one of Brazil’s greatest musical ambassadors.

In a career spanning nearly 20 years and styles ranging from samba to electronic music, Mercury has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide and has consistently toured throughout Europe and North, Central, and South America to millions of fans.  In 2005, she regained ownership of her entire catalogue outside Brazil and owns all masters of new releases.

The Orchard calls itself the world’s leading digital distributor and marketer of independent music. It owns a catalogue of more than one million tracks representing 73 countries, thousands of labels, and every music genre.

This catalogue includes titles from multi-platinum acts such as Green Day, Coldplay, Ray Charles, and Barenaked Ladies, as well as from breaking bands like The Hold Steady, Bedouin Soundclash, and Immortal Technique.

The Orchard supplies all the leading legal digital music stores and mobile operators throughout the world and markets its labels’ catalogues for sync song placements in films, commercials, and television shows.

The company is owned by Dimensional Associates, the private equity arm of JDS Capital Management, Inc. whose portfolio companies also include eMusic and Dimensional Music Publishing.  The Orchard is headquartered in New York and London, with offices in 23 countries and six continents.
