Brazil Has Over 93 Million Cell Phones, But Sector’s Growth Slows Down

Last month was the best July ever for the sale of cell phones in Brazil. Mobile telephony in the country added another 1.28 million numbers in July.

Up to the seventh month of the year, there were 93.04 million telephone numbers operating in the country, a volume 1.4% greater than the total registered in June.

Of the total, around 74 million are prepaid and 18 million are monthly lines. This was the third best monthly result for the year, according to information from Anatel, the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency.

The country had added 1.79 million new users in May when there were several promotions for Mother’s Day. In March, another 1.34 million people had bought a cell phone.

When compared to July of last year the growth in the industry is 21.23%, which seems big, but shows a drop in the rhythm of growth for the sector. While between January and July of last year there were 10.97 million cell phones added in Brazil, they fell to 6.83 million for the same period this year.
