Ministers Hold Talks in Preparation for Chirac’s Visit to Brazil

The Brazilian and French governments are studying the possibility of holding a Year of France in Brazil. The press office of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations informed that this topic was discussed at a breakfast meeting in Paris, on Monday, February 27, between the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, and the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Phillipe Douste-Blazy.

Last year the Year of Brazil in France was commemorated in over 300 events that attracted a public estimated at around 15 million people.

According to the Ministry, the two ministers have already agreed on the idea of holding the Year of France in Brazil. The date will be determined at an opportune time.

The possibility of producing medicine for the poorest African countries was another issue discussed between Amorim, and his French counterpart.

The two ministers considered cooperation possibilities between developed and developing nations that could benefit, in particular, the poorest nations in Africa.

The ministers also talked about the next visit of President Jacques Chirac to Brazil, scheduled for May, and studied perspectives of bilateral cooperation in areas such as health, science, technology, and aircraft industry.

In the meeting, Amorim and Douste-Blazy were able to analyze an extensive multilateral agenda, which revealed significant convergence of positions regarding the situation in Haiti.

They also talked about the Middle East, especially Iran, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, and discussed the reform process of the United Nations Security Council.
