Brazil to Study AIDS Among Blacks

Brazil’s Ministry of Health and the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO) plan to spend around US$ 3.4 million on 39 research projects to investigate AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

The studies should get started in April. Seven of the studies have to do with AIDS cases among members of the black population.

According to the representative of the Ministry of Health, Márcio de Sá, Brazil is recognized internationally as one of the countries with the best AIDS programs. The idea is to improve its actions in this field by stimulating research.

"The goal of the Ministry of Health in financing these projects is to increase the number of studies on this specific area in order to boost Brazil’s health policies for the treatment and prevention of STDs and HIV/AIDS," he said.
