Brazil Salutes LatAm’s Post Neoliberalism New Presidents

Brazil’s presidential special aide for International Affairs, Marco Aurélio Garcia, speaking at a 6th World Social Forum conference, in Caracas, Venezuela, declared that there is a new generation of presidents in Latin America who are "post neoliberalism."

According to Garcia, the new presidents will not only have to promote economic growth with equitable income distribution and strengthen democratic institutions, they will also have to avoid the errors of the past, such as allowing inflation or foreign debt to propel growth. "There has to be sound macroeconomic growth," he said.

"These are positions that conservatives embrace and in the past they have often used them against us. We must make them our own. We have to demonstrate that we can manage macroeconomics better than the neoliberal right can," said Garcia.

"Latin American is entering a period of profound democracy… after the instability brought on by the neoliberal model… Now the region can move toward integration," he declared.

Garcia added that another important step was to reduce external vulnerability. He pointed to the examples of Brazil and Argentina which had both recently anticipated paying off their debts to the International Monetary Fund.
