UN Forces Commander Who Died in Haiti Is Back in Brazil

The body of Brazilian General Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar, who commanded the United Nations Peace Operation forces in Haiti, arrived at the BrasÀ­lia Air Base at 9 A.M.

The head of the presidential institutional security cabinet, general Jorge Armando Félix, accompanied the arrival of the body, which was taken to the Brasí­lia Forensic Medicine Institute for embalmment.

A memorial service is scheduled for 8:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 11, at the Air Base, before the general’s remains are flown to Rio de Janeiro.

A funeral service will also be held when the body arrives in Rio, after which it will be transferred to the Carmel Memorial in the Caju Cemetery, where the general will be buried.

General Bacellar was 58 years old and had been in charge of the peace mission in Haiti since last September.

He was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head, on Saturday, January 7, in his hotel room in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital. The general is survived by his wife and two children, who live in the United States.
